Why do you sit there?
By James V. Signorile (January 1969)
Why do you sit there, all you people?
Why do you sit there and smile?
Don't you know that in your lifetime,
Your chance comes but once in a while?
You say you're contented and untormented,
But I tell you the way it will be.
You sit there so pretty, I feel it's a pity,
Your mind, you know, will never be free.
Oh, I feel so sad, yet you seem glad,
That you care about no one, and no one knows you.
You stay all alone in your dark little room,
And nothing at all is ever new.
Why do you sit there, all you people?
Why do you sit there and smile?
Don't you know that in your lifetime,
Your chance comes but once in a while?
Why don't you go out and see the world?
You now it's waiting out there for a look.
Or would you rather sit at home, disconnect the phone,
And read your dirty books?
Oh, I feel so sad, yet you seem glad,
That you care about no one, and no one knows you.
You stay all alone in your dark little room,
And nothing at all is ever new.
Are you really happy as you are?
Wouldn't you like to get above,
Sitting alone with your empty smiles,
And get out and show some love?
Why do you sit there, all you people?
Why do you sit there and smile?
Don't you know that in your lifetime,
Your chance comes but once in a while?
